This past spring semester of 2018 was the first semester I have spent employeed at UC as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for Organic Chemistry I. Because this job is employment through the Learning Commons, it counts as a pre-approved Honors Experience, and I thus opted in to include it as such. I was especially excited to enter the role of SI leader for Organic Chemistry because I believe this is the dream job to set me up well for what I hope to do in the future - teach Organic Chemistry at a collegiate level. As an SI Leader, I sit in on every lecture during the semester, then twice weekly, I hold review sessions to facilitate group learning and review of the material introduced in lecture by the professor (this semester, Dr. Pinhas). These sessions more often than not involved hours of planning for worksheets (the final exam review worksheet is attached below) and activities that students could use to review the concepts they had heard earlier in the week. Additionally, I held weekly office hours for students to stop by and get additional aid. I believe with my whole self that this job has set me up for success for the future because I so desire to know Organic Chemistry well and teach it to college students later in life. I now have deeper understanding and knowledge of the material, experience making worksheets and review tools specific to Organic Chem, and further connections with both peers and professors in my field of study who have poured out to me their precious time and aid this semester.
As a UHP pre-approved experience, there were a few other opportunities I had for this semester of Learning Commons employment. I participated in a GROWL conversation, which involved several Learning Commons employees who together conducted a group discussion regarding self-reflection on our employment at the Learning Commons, how it has influenced us professionally and what it has meant for our future careers. I attended an event by a public speaker who focused on self-discipline in life; it was a general presentation about how to be truly productive, take rest seriously, and self-motivate which gave me insight on not only myself but also the ways in which future students of mine may need help adjusting their study techniques and personal time-management. Finally, I was a part of a presentation panel of Learning Commons employees who talked with graduate student teachers. We discussed the roles of Graduate/Teaching Assistants, our experiences with them in courses we have taken at UC, and ways we think graduate instructors can improve their methods to best aid students. These opportunities were supplemental to my employment at the Learning Commons and helped me take in additional methods for shaping my identity and strategy as a future educator of Organic Chemistry.
